2019 InspirASIAN Dragon Boat - Week 3

Hello Team,

Thanks to those who attended the Second practice of the season. We had full 20 people for the second session thanks to few guest paddlers.

We had few brand new paddlers who learned the concept very fast and the boat was moving.

This will be the last email that goes out to the entire dragon boat list. After this message, I will only be sending to those who signed up so reply if you are still planing to join.

We want at least solid 20 - 30 padders. Next practice will be this Saturday, June 15th. Even if you are beginner, please come out but come out early to learn the basics.

We were planning to have a boot camp session afterward but it has been changed to June 22 AND July 13.

Also, no one has returned the home work yet, so please respond if you have done your home work to get that extra point for participation award.

If you have any question, please feel free to contact me.

It's good habit to check my blog page for any updates once a week at https://apcadragons.blogspot.com/ during the season since the info that I share on the emails are added to the blog.

Fitness Sessions:
We decided to include two boot camp session in our training which will be after practice on June 22 and July 13. I do not make this mandatory to attend but it is counted toward Participant Award points.

Participation Awards:
During our race weekend, we award the team members with most points with first, second, and third place prizes. Each attendance to practice earn you one point (we require that you attend minimum of 4 practices). Each homework assignment, boot camp attendance, and extra credit assigned will each gets you one point. Who ever have the most point by the race will win prize.

EXTRA CREDIT opportunity:
We also have Extra Credit opportunity which you will earn point for the Participation Award.
To earn this point, you just need to attend one practice session with the year-round team by 7/7. (Space Dragons practice starts at 7:30am on Saturday and Sunday at the same location) Reason for this assignment is to give you different experience than paddling with InspirASIAN. By practicing with the folks who have been doing this for awhile will give you better perspective on how team paddles together. I think you will learn a great deal from just one practice. Don't be intimidated since most likely you will be with other mostly beginner paddlers and coach will be working with you.

How to sign up for Space Dragons practice
It's easy!
Go to http://doodle.com/poll/rki2zfv8iirhah39 OR you can also access from http://www.spacedragons.org/ then go to Practice Poll.

Just put Your Name (InspirASIAN) then click on the date you will be attending.
That's it!

Important Team Info:

I am still waiting for more people to sign up since I need to decided if we need to register second boat for the tournament.
We would need minimum of 30 paddlers to have second boats, so at this time I'm not sure if we will have enough for 2 teams.
This means that anyone after the first 20 people will be put on waiting list.

However...
Rather than putting people on waiting list here's what we should do if we have more than 20 members that will continue to the race.
I would like to get individual's commitment with confirmation of payment, which is tax deductible by the way.
If we get at least 30 people confirmed with payment then I'll order the second boat then we'll have one mixed boat and one corporate boat.
So...you can tell your coworkers/family and friends to join. Maximum will be 40 people which is 18 paddlers and up to 2 alternates per boat.

Corporate boat only does 500m races both days
Mixed boat does 500m & 200m races both days

This is YOUR team. We can make it happen.

Payment Info:
You can pay via check or cash this weekend 6/8 and thereafter.
If you prefer, you can also pay via Paypal or Venmo. I believe there's no extra charge for Venmo but PayPal has a convenient fee that is added.
You can look for my name & picture (I attached the pictures) Venmo: T-Yoo & PayPal: Thomas Yoo
Be sure to put "InspirASIAN Dragons Race Fee".

HOME WORK!!!

First home work is easy peasey. DUE BY June 16
You all learned the proper way to paddle now. Top arm by your head, bottom arm straight, twist to face your partner, etc...

Here's the video on how to paddle dragon boat.
First trainign session of the season and a great outline of the setup required for a solid dragon boat paddle technique.

This video shows slight bent on the top arm but I would say more bent is more comfortable for most of the people but you can do it whichever is feels comfortable.
She also pulls little too far back then what I would like.

Now, practice that form to the tune of Queen – We Will Rock You.
title says it all one of the greatest songs of all time!

This song has slow beat and it’s about 2 minutes.
Every clap should be hitting the water.
It is slow enough to really twist and stretch out.

Practice your form for the entire song for both left and right side for total of 4 minutes.
Please let me know via Email, Facebook, or comment on our blog.

Thank you.

GENERAL INFO:

Dragon Boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition that is popular internationally to this day. It involves keen coordination, focus, and strength.

Join the InspirASIAN Dragon Boat team for fun, health, and networking because Your Health Matters. We are looking for paddlers and hospitality crew from June 1 through July 28, 2019.

For additional information, contact team captain/coach, Thomas Yoo at inspirASIANdragons@outlook.com. We will provide PFD (lifejacket) and a paddle but we do recommend getting your own PFD if possible. Paddlers usually wear swimsuit underneath their regular clothes but any workout clothes that can get wet is fine. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

We will only have limited practices for the 2019 Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival (https://www.lbdragonboat.com/) so I hope you can make to all practices plus both race days. This will be fun & exciting opportunity if you haven't experienced the race before.
Items to bring for practice:
Required- Signed ICEA & SCDBC Waiver form (I will bring some extra at practice). This is required before you get on the boat.  This can be downloaded from Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival website at https://www.lbdragonboat.com/forms.php , click on Festival Participant Waiver Form.

Recommended- sunscreen (sun protection), sunglasses (eye protection), hat (additional sun protection), water (it's a workout), towel (to dry yourself since you'll get wet), quarters (if parking at meter lot)

Optional- folding chair (if you want comfortable place to sit), change of clothes (if you want to get out of wet clothes), sandals/aqua shoes (some folks like it barefoot, other sandals, I like the aqua socks), snacks (especially if you didn't have time for breakfast), water gloves (it's nice to have them to grab on to the paddle)

Where to meet:
Our first practice for the Long Beach Dragon Boat Festival race will be on Saturday 6/1/2019 Time: 9:00am at the Mother Beach/Marine Park, Long Beach. When using your GPS, type-in 5739 Appian Way, Long Beach, CA 90803, which is about, where the entrance to the meter parking is. This is metered parking lot and the parking fee is enforced starting at 8:00am. (15 min = 25 cents) There is also free parking area which is linked below on Google map along with our meet location at the park. This is roughly our meet spot at the park on page 1. Free parking area (Boy Scout Parking) is shown on page 2: click here.
